How Health Practitioners Can Educate At Scale

You became a health practitioner to change lives, not to spend half your week repeating the same patient education, creating endless educational content, or sending clients into the wilds of “Dr. Google” and hoping they come back with something remotely science-backed.

And yet, there’s a real problem.

Your patients need education. They need to understand why you’re recommending a particular test, lifestyle change, supplement, or protocol, and they need enough knowledge to connect the dots between their symptoms and what may be happening in their bodies. But you only have so many hours in the day.

That’s why I’m so interested in solutions that allow health practitioners to provide exceptional patient education at scale without creating everything themselves. And when that solution can also become an additional revenue stream for your practice? Even better.

“Not every dollar of revenue should require another hour on your calendar.”

The Patient Education Problem Nobody Talks About

If you're a functional medicine practitioner, health coach, MD, therapist, or other wellness professional, you've probably experienced this.

You're explaining something important to a patient. You’re giving them the science, explaining mechanisms, and trying to help them understand why this matters when suddenly… the eyes glaze over. As clinicians and health experts, we sometimes fall into the trap of explaining how the watch works when our patients simply want to know what time it is. That doesn't mean they don't care. It means complicated health information needs to be communicated in a way people can actually absorb, remember, and act on.

And if we want better patient engagement, greater adherence to recommendations, and ultimately better patient outcomes, education matters. The challenge is figuring out how to deliver it without adding another dozen hours to your week.

What If Someone Else Created The Education For You?

I recently sat down with Vesela Apostolova, co-founder of Zonia, a health education platform I've come to think of as the “Netflix for health and wellness.”

Zonia has created more than 40 health docuseries and over 1,000 short, watchable episodes featuring leading voices across functional medicine and wellness, including experts such as Jeffrey Bland, Terry Wahls, JJ Virgin, David Perlmutter, Joel Fuhrman, and many others.

And what impressed me wasn't simply who was featured. It was how the information was delivered. Instead of asking patients to sit through a four-hour medical lecture, complex topics are broken into digestible episodes using storytelling, animation, motion graphics, and on-screen explanations.

Zonia reports a 90% video completion rate for its episodes. That matters because education only works when people actually consume it.

Science-Backed Patient Education Without Sending People Down A Rabbit Hole

Here's another challenge every modern practitioner understands:

Patients are already researching their health. If you don't give them somewhere trustworthy to go, they'll find somewhere themselves: Google, YouTube, AI, social media, or wherever else the search takes them. And while there is extraordinary health information available online, there is also plenty of fringe, disconnected, contradictory, and questionable material. One search can quickly turn into 37 browser tabs and a patient wondering whether their breakfast, shampoo, Wi-Fi router, and left sock are secretly destroying their mitochondria.

That's not exactly the kind of patient engagement we're looking for. Zonia takes a different approach.

Its docuseries organize topics into an educational journey rather than serving up disconnected pieces of information. Individual series explore areas such as brain and mental health, autoimmunity, immune health, toxins, cancer, longevity, cardiovascular health, testing, nutrition, hormones, gut health, and more.

For the practitioner, that creates an opportunity to say, “Here's something I trust. Start here.” That can be incredibly powerful.

Patient Education At Scale Gives You Your Time Back

Your expertise is valuable. Your individualized recommendations are valuable. Your ability to look at the person sitting across from you and understand the nuances of their health is valuable. Repeating the same foundational education for the 47th time? Maybe that doesn't require your personal calendar.

High-quality online patient education can become a natural extension of the work you're already doing in your practice.

In our conversation, Vesela described Zonia as an extension of the office, a way for practitioners to provide trusted education between appointments while preserving their time for individualized care.

That distinction is important. Leveraging your expertise doesn't mean caring less. It means protecting your time for the places where your expertise matters most. And for practitioners already feeling stretched thin between patient care, marketing, team management, technology, content creation, and trying to have something resembling a personal life, that matters a lot.

Better-Educated Patients Can Become More Engaged Patients

There's another side of patient education that's particularly interesting for anyone trying to grow a functional medicine practice or other wellness business.

Educated patients ask better questions. According to Vesela, practitioners partnering with Zonia have reported patients returning with questions about testing, supplements, organ-system connections, and additional aspects of their health after consuming the educational content.

Think about the difference. Instead of spending an appointment convincing someone that gut health might influence another aspect of their health, they may arrive saying, “I learned about the gut-brain connection. What does this mean for me?” Now you're having a completely different conversation.

You're moving from foundational education into personalized application, and that's where you shine.

And Yes—There's A Revenue Opportunity Too

This is where the entrepreneurial side of being a health practitioner gets interesting.

Zonia also offers practitioners an affiliate partnership. When someone you refer becomes a paying Zonia member, the practitioner can earn affiliate revenue. In other words, you're potentially combining better patient education + saved practitioner time + patient engagement + an additional revenue stream. That's my kind of math.

Vesela shared that Zonia has paid $1.5 million in commissions to partners and described examples ranging from practitioners earning a few thousand dollars in recurring monthly commissions to some partners generating upper-five-figure affiliate commissions, depending on factors such as audience size and participation.

Of course, affiliate income isn't guaranteed. Your results will depend on your audience, how you promote, and whether the offer is relevant to the people you serve. But the underlying business principle is worth paying attention to: as a health entrepreneur, not every dollar of revenue should require another hour on your calendar. That's how practitioner burnout happens.

Affiliate Marketing For Health Practitioners Doesn't Have To Feel Gross

I know what some practitioners are thinking: “Joy, I don't want to constantly sell things to my patients.” Good. Neither do I. An effective affiliate marketing strategy for health practitioners isn't about finding random products and blasting your audience with links. It's about alignment.

I like to think about your audience as traveling on a superhighway. Your practice occupies one lane, while another trustworthy company might occupy a different lane while serving the same people. A strong practitioner affiliate partnership allows you to point people toward something genuinely useful that you don't need, or want, to create yourself. In this case, Zonia stays in the education lane.

According to Vesela, its educational content does not include product placements, brand placements, or advertising, and its experts are expected not to promote personal brands or products within that educational material.

That means practitioners can use the platform as a complement to their care rather than sending patients toward a business competing for their clinical relationship.

Borrowed Credibility Is Powerful

There's another benefit to practitioner affiliate partnerships that often gets overlooked: borrowed credibility. Imagine you're the person who introduces your audience to an insightful interview with a world-class researcher or respected functional medicine physician.

Who gets some of the credit for bringing that information into their world? You do. You're becoming a trusted curator, and in an online environment where your audience is drowning in information, curation itself is valuable. You don't have to know everything, personally create everything, or interview every expert. You need to know who and what you trust enough to put in front of your people.

That's a much more scalable approach to building authority.

This Is What A Scalable Health Business Looks Like

For years, we've helped practitioners understand that scaling doesn't mean becoming less personal. It means becoming more intentional about where your personal attention goes. Your expertise should go toward the work only you can do, while your systems, team, technology, content, partnerships, and leveraged offers handle more of everything else.

That's how you begin moving away from a business where more impact = more appointments = more hours = more burnout. Instead, you can build an ecosystem where your 1:1 care, group programs, testing, courses, partnerships, automated systems, and trusted educational resources all work together.

That's how you build a scalable health business capable of creating more impact without requiring you to sacrifice the balanced, healthy life you're encouraging your patients to build.

Ready To Explore Patient Education That Works While You Don't?

You don't need another complicated piece of technology to figure out, another 47-step marketing strategy, or another reason to spend Sunday afternoon creating educational slides your patients may never watch. What you do need are trusted resources, systems, and partnerships that allow you to protect your expertise and multiply its reach.

If providing science-backed patient education, increasing patient engagement, saving practitioner time, and potentially developing another leveraged revenue stream sounds aligned with the health business you're building,

Because the goal isn't simply to build a bigger practice. It's to create more impact without building yourself a bigger job.
